A Non-Governmental Organization, Coalition Against Political Victimization, has strongly condemned what it termed as political victimization and persecution of the leadership of the Senate, stressing that it is a major threat to democracy if allowed to continue.

President of the coalition, Abdulsamad Amadi in a statement issued and made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Wednesday, frowned at the recent move by the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation to arraign the Senate President and his deputy, Dr Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu respectively on fresh charges.

“We are here again speaking up, against some actions that is gradually becoming a big threat to our democracy. It is no longer news that some persons with vested interests have been instigating and watering the unwarranted and politically motivated trial of the President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT),” the statement said.

“This trial has been a very huge distraction to the Senate President whom we all know is determined to play his role in the task of rebuilding our nation and its nosediving economy.

“Every member of the public is very much aware that this so called forgery case has since been resolved at the floor of the Senate. For some people to now want to capitalize on the issue shows the extent they are willing to go in order to scuttle the leadership of the 8th Senate.

“It is obvious that there is a move orchestrated to cripple the legislature in order to make it ineffective and nonfunctional irrespective of how detrimental such actions will be to the polity,” it stated.

The coalition described the actions of the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice as very unfortunate, stressing that it was happening at a time when Nigerians are looking up to the executive and party leaders to proffer solutions to the country’s embarrassing economy.
