Rivers South-East Senator Barinada Mpigi Dies at 64

Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has died at the age of 64.

The lawmaker reportedly passed away on Wednesday after a brief illness, drawing tributes from colleagues, political associates and constituents across Rivers State and beyond.

Mpigi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was first elected into the National Assembly in 2011 as a member of the House of Representatives, representing Eleme/Tai/Oyigbo Federal Constituency.

After serving two terms in the green chamber, he was elected to the Senate in 2019 and re-elected in 2023 to represent Rivers South-East in the 10th National Assembly.

At the time of his death, he served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, where he oversaw legislative matters relating to federal road infrastructure and public works projects.

He was also known for his involvement in oversight functions concerning developments in the Niger Delta region.

Tributes have continued to pour in from political leaders and associates, who described him as a committed public servant and grassroots politician.

 Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
