African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has called on Africans to renew their commitment to unity, Pan-Africanism and solidarity as the continent marks African Union Day.
Youssouf said the Sept. 9 observance commemorates the 1999 Sirte Declaration, which laid the foundation for the creation of the African Union as a vehicle for continental integration and a stronger African voice globally.
This year’s celebration comes days after the United Nations General Assembly endorsed an African-led initiative championed by Togo to promote world maps that more accurately represent Africa’s true size. The AU said the initiative goes beyond cartography and reflects the need for Africa to shape how it is represented globally.
“A map may change how the world sees Africa, but Africa’s destiny will ultimately be shaped by how Africans see themselves,” Youssouf said, urging Africans to recognise the continent’s strength and potential.
He said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen African agency through economic integration, peace and security, sustainable development and greater representation in global decision-making.
Youssouf also pointed to the African Continental Free Trade Area and Agenda 2063 as key instruments for building an integrated, prosperous and peaceful continent.
“Africa is not seeking a larger place in the world; Africa is reclaiming its rightful place in the world,” he said.
The AU chief also stressed that progress must be measured by improvements in the lives of Africans, highlighting the union’s 2026 focus on sustainable water availability and safe sanitation.
He called on African governments, regional blocs, institutions, businesses, civil society, women and young people to help build a more integrated and self-confident continent.
“The Africa of tomorrow must not only be better represented on the map; it must be stronger in the world, more united at home and more prosperous for its people,” Youssouf said.
