Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo says his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), will not present a candidate in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

Soludo made this known during a media chat in Awka, shortly after he was sworn in for a second term as governor.

“We are not going to field one,” he said, speaking on the party’s plans for the election.

He explained that the decision follows APGA’s past approach.

“In 2011, APGA did not field a presidential candidate… [we] adopted President Goodluck Jonathan,” he added.

Instead, Soludo said the party is likely to support the current president, Bola Tinubu, for a second term.

“At a personal and party level… President Bola Tinubu is my friend.

"I believe he has done well and deserves a second term,” he said.

He also noted that the decision is partly about political strategy and the interests of his people.

“It is about my people; they have to have a stake at the table,” Soludo said, adding that Tinubu “would win with or without APGA.”

Nigeria is expected to hold its next general elections in January 2027, where voters will choose a president, lawmakers and other leaders.

APGA is a regional party with strong support in Anambra State, where it has remained in power for years.

Political analysts say the party’s decision not to field a candidate could shape alliances ahead of the election, especially as major parties prepare for a competitive race.

For now, Soludo’s position signals early support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
