France head coach Didier Deschamps has temporarily left the national team camp at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the death of his mother.

The French Football Federation confirmed that Deschamps has returned home for family arrangements and will miss France’s upcoming group fixture against Norway.

In his absence, assistant coach Guy Stéphan will temporarily take charge of team duties.

The federation added that Deschamps is expected to return to the dugout later in the tournament once he has completed his personal commitments.

France has already secured qualification to the knockout stage after impressive group-stage victories, including a 3-0 win over Iraq, where Kylian Mbappé scored twice in a dominant display.

The team remains one of the tournament favourites, with strong squad depth allowing it to maintain momentum despite the coach’s absence.
