The Federal Government has directed electricity distribution companies and meter installers to provide and install electricity meters for consumers at no cost.
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu said the meters were procured under the World Bank funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme.
He warned that any DISCO or installer that charges consumers for meters or installation will face prosecution.
Adelabu said the initiative is aimed at improving billing accuracy, transparency and revenue collection across the power sector.
He added that the government plans to deploy 3.4 million meters nationwide, noting that about one million have already been delivered.
The minister said full metering will encourage customers to pay for electricity consumed and improve liquidity in the sector, leading to better service delivery.
