The Federal Government has unveiled a reusable textbook policy aimed at cutting the cost of education, improving learning outcomes and promoting sustainability through durable learning materials.

Under the policy, textbooks will be standardized and produced to last between four and six years. This will allow books to be reused across several academic sessions and shared among siblings.

The government says disposable workbooks will no longer be allowed. Officials say the move will significantly reduce repeated spending by parents and guardians.

The textbook policy forms part of wider education reforms designed to ease financial pressure on families. Other measures include the introduction of a uniform academic calendar nationwide.

Graduation ceremonies will also be streamlined to just three transition points. These are Primary Six, Junior Secondary School Three and Senior Secondary School Three.

The Federal Government said the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council will handle quality assurance for the textbooks. The council will also limit the number of approved textbooks per subject.

Authorities added that clear revision timelines will be enforced to keep learning materials relevant while maintaining durability.

Officials say the reforms align Nigeria’s basic education system with global best practices and will deliver better value for money and improved learning conditions for students nationwide.
