Former British Prime Minister Starmer Steps Down as Member of Parliament

Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his decision to step down as the Member of Parliament representing Holborn and St Pancras.

Starmer made the announcement on Tuesday, saying he believes it is the right time to leave the House of Commons and allow a successor to take over the London constituency he has represented for several years.

In a statement, Starmer said he would now turn his attention to international affairs, with a particular focus on defence, security, trade and technology.

He said the decision comes at a time of significant changes around the world, adding that his experience in government and public life could be put to use in addressing emerging international challenges.

Starmer’s resignation as MP will trigger a by-election in Holborn and St Pancras, where the Labour Party will be required to select a new candidate to contest the seat.

The former prime minister said whoever emerges as the Labour Party’s candidate would receive his full support and backing.

Starmer’s departure from Parliament comes months after he resigned as leader of the governing Labour Party in June.

His resignation followed the Labour Party’s leadership transition, with Andy Burnham confirmed as the new party leader in July. Burnham subsequently became Britain’s prime minister.

Starmer had served as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras since 2015 and became Labour leader in 2020 before leading the party into government.

His decision to leave Parliament marks another significant change in British politics, as the Labour Party prepares for a by-election to determine his successor in the constituency.
