Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat says the state’s available resources are not enough to meet its growing infrastructure needs, as rising costs and rapid population growth continue to put pressure on government spending.
Hamzat made this known while speaking on a a recent radio programme.
He identified transport, housing, healthcare and education as areas requiring increased and sustained investment, noting that road rehabilitation alone had become increasingly expensive.
According to him, Lagos has about 9,911 roads requiring regular maintenance, prompting the Lagos State Public Works Corporation to increase its maintenance teams from 14 to 34.
Hamzat also stressed the need to integrate drainage and water management into road construction to address flooding, given Lagos’ low-lying terrain.
On housing, he called for a functional mortgage system and innovative financing mechanisms to make home ownership more accessible to residents, while noting that population growth and limited land had made the housing challenge more complex.
The deputy governor also dismissed claims that government projects were concentrated in highbrow areas, saying development had been spread across the state.
He maintained that strengthening infrastructure and public services would require not only more funding but also greater professional capacity and long-term planning.
