The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has suspended the senatorial election in Enugu East Senatorial District.

Speaking at a media briefing on Friday in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu said the election which was slated for Saturday, February 25, 2023, alongside the presidential election, has been moved to March 11, 2023.

The INEC boss noted that the postponement became necessary following the murder of the Labour Party (LP)’s senatorial candidate for the district, Oyibo Chukwu.

According to him, the Labour Party reached out to the electoral body to convey its intention to get a replacement and proceed to the poll at a later date.

Recall that in the early hours of Wednesday, Chukwu and his personal assistant were assassinated by hoodlums in the Eke-Otu Amechi-Awkunanaw area of Enugu, while returning from a campaign.
