Iran has set a series of conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, including compensation for war damages, lifting of sanctions and an end to military action against Tehran and its allies.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Saturday that talks with Oman on the transit and management of the strategic waterway were nearing completion, but warned that reopening the strait would depend on additional conditions.
Security chief Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr said Tehran also wants the lifting of a U.S. naval blockade, the release of frozen Iranian assets and compensation for damage caused during the war.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the reopening of the strait would depend on Iran’s conditions, rather than the ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Oman.
The developments come as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen sharply amid repeated attacks on vessels.
The United Arab Emirates condemned an Iranian missile attack on an ADNOC tanker transiting the waterway, while the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that a vessel was struck by a projectile off Oman, causing a fire but no casualties.
Oman also condemned the attacks and said negotiations over navigation arrangements in the strait were continuing in a positive atmosphere.
The Strait of Hormuz is a major global energy route, carrying a significant share of the world's oil and gas supplies.
