The search continues for the gunman who fatally shot Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist and ally of US President Donald Trump, during a political event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
Kirk, 31, founder of the conservative youth group Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck while addressing students at a question-and-answer session for his group’s “American Comeback Tour.” Chaos erupted as attendees fled the scene.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that a person earlier questioned in connection with the attack has been released, adding that investigations remain active. “Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in the interest of transparency,” Patel said on X.
Trump, who announced Kirk’s death on his Truth Social platform, described him as “great and legendary,” praising his role in mobilising young conservatives. “Charlie inspired millions, and tonight all who knew him and loved him are united in shock and horror,” Trump said in an Oval Office address, blaming “radical left” rhetoric for fuelling political violence in the United States.
Kirk’s death comes amid a series of politically motivated attacks in the US, heightening concerns about rising violence ahead of next year’s elections.
