The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed its commitment to fully enforce the ban on the production and sale of alcoholic drinks in sachets and small-volume PET or glass bottles below 200ml by December 2025.

The move follows a recent directive from the Senate and is backed by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the measure aligns with the Agency’s duty to protect public health, particularly among children, adolescents, and young adults vulnerable to harmful alcohol use.

She noted that the decision is not punitive but preventive, based on scientific evidence that links small packaged alcohol to increased misuse among youth.

“The government cannot continue to sacrifice citizens’ well-being for short-term economic gains,” she said.

NAFDAC will continue collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to raise awareness of the health and social risks associated with consuming alcohol in sachets and small bottles.
