The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called for the immediate rescue of teachers and pupils abducted during attacks on schools in Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the union expressed concern over the continued captivity of the victims, describing the situation as distressing for their families, the school community and the teaching profession.
The statement, signed by the state Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, urged the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of those abducted.
According to the union, concerns have grown following the circulation of a video allegedly released by the abductors showing the victims appealing for their freedom.
"The union views this development as heartbreaking, barbaric and unacceptable. No child or teacher deserves to endure such terror," the statement said.
NUT said the prolonged captivity of the victims was causing psychological trauma for their families and raising concerns about their welfare.
The union called for coordinated and intelligence-driven operations to ensure the safe return of the abducted teachers and pupils, while acknowledging ongoing interventions by the government and security agencies.
It also urged community leaders and residents to support security agencies with credible information that could assist rescue efforts.
Reaffirming its commitment to safe learning environments, the union stressed that schools should remain places of education and not targets of violence.
"We remain committed to ensuring that our schools become safe havens, never battlegrounds. We demand swift and responsive actions, renewed commitment, and unwavering resolve from all authorities involved," the statement added.
