Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has urged editors across the country to scrutinise the qualifications and past records of politicians seeking public office ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi made the call after participating in the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu State, where he urged the media to strengthen its role in holding politicians accountable.
He said editors should investigate the records of political candidates, expose past wrongdoing and provide Nigerians with the information needed to make informed decisions.
Obi also urged editors to demand excellence from politicians seeking public office and ensure that those in leadership positions reflect the values expected in society.
The former Anambra State governor said the conference, themed “The Ballot, The Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” provided an opportunity to discuss the media’s role in strengthening democracy.
He thanked the Nigerian Guild of Editors for inviting him to the conference and said the media had an important role to play in protecting Nigeria’s democracy.
