The Lagos State Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) has transported 2.5 million passengers over the last five years, according to the company’s managing director, Abdoulbaq Balogun.

The figure was disclosed on Saturday, on the sidelines of the organization's 2025 Strategic Management Retreat.

Speaking at the retreat, themed "Advancing Water Transportation for a Sustainable Lagos," Balogun highlighted the company’s achievements since its relaunch in February 2020.

He credited the support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who commissioned seven locally-manufactured boats on February 16, 2020, bringing the fleet to 12.

Sanwo-Olu delivered on a promise to expand the fleet further by providing seven additional boats in July 2021.

LAGFERRY's key achievements from February 2020 to June 2025 include:

  • The transportation of 2.5 million passengers.

  • The completion of 27,337 trips, covering a total of 745,851 kilometers on the waterways.

  •  The coverage of 31,272 hours of operation, equivalent to 1,303 days.

  • The creation of 300 jobs.

  • And the movement of 923,120 trucks using multipurpose barges.

Balogun disclosed that LAGFERRY plans to explore and activate more routes, digitalize its operations, and establish a dedicated maintenance workshop.

The company is also exploring the conversion of its petrol-powered boats to the more environmentally friendly Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or electric-powered boats.

Balogun stated that LAGFERRY has become a model for other water transport providers, by setting standards.
