Nigeria Needs Firm Leadership to Implement Security Emergency – Sajoh

A public affairs commentator, Ahmad Sajoh, says Nigeria needs strong political will to make President Bola Tinubu’s new security emergency work for ordinary people.

On 26 November 2025, President Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency. He ordered the police to hire 20,000 more officers — bringing recent recruitments to 50,000 — and asked the National Assembly to review laws so states can set up their own police if needed.

The president also said some security training centres would be reformed and that the army and intelligence services would step up operations.

Sajoh told reporters and TV shows that the idea is right, but that leaders must act fast and honestly. He said political will — meaning leaders must stop arguing and start doing the hard work — is the most important thing to make the plan work. He added that without clear rules, steady funding, and fair use of new officers, the move could fail.

Experts say the government must do three simple things: speed up training, put new officers where they are needed, and make sure money for security is watched carefully. They also say state police would only help if the law is changed and states follow the rules.

It remains to be seen if the National Assembly starts work on laws for state police, how fast recruits are trained and sent to trouble spots, and whether local leaders and communities join security plans so schools, farms and towns are safer.
