The Lagos State government has introduced 10 newly procured ambulance motorcycles, known as Motorcycle Response Units (MRUs), to improve emergency response and pre-hospital care across the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the initiative to help paramedics beat Lagos’ notorious traffic and reach patients in hard-to-access areas. The ambulance bikes, handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), are equipped with defibrillators, oxygen tanks, nebulizers, glucometers, first aid kits, and two-way radios.

At the commissioning, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, described the project as a “game-changing innovation” that reinforces Lagos’ leadership in healthcare. She explained that trained paramedics will ride the bikes to administer life-saving support before full ambulances arrive.

“The Ambu-bikes are Lagos’ solution to traffic challenges. They’ll get to people quicker, stabilize patients, and save lives in record time,” she said.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, noted that the MRUs are part of a five-year plan to transform emergency care, which also includes mobile ICUs, boat ambulances, and plans for medical helicopters.

The Director of LASAMBUS, Mrs. Beatrice Makinde, hailed the innovation as a breakthrough that would help paramedics reach victims faster, especially in crowded events, narrow streets, and off-road areas.

With the launch, Lagos becomes the first state in Nigeria to deploy ambulance bikes, setting a new standard for healthcare innovation in Africa.
