President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, as chairman of the National Universities Commission's Governing Board.

The Presidency announced the appointment on Monday. Ogundipe succeeds Professor Olufemi Aina, who resigned from the position after less than a year in office.

Ogundipe served as UNILAG's Vice-Chancellor and is widely regarded within Nigeria's academic community as a reform-minded administrator.

The Presidency said his mandate at the NUC would focus on funding reform, global academic competitiveness, and institutional stability across Nigeria's university system.

The NUC regulates university education in Nigeria, overseeing over 200 public and private universities.

The appointment comes at a time of ongoing debate about funding shortfalls, accreditation standards, and the quality of undergraduate education in the country.
