President Bola Tinubu on Saturday congratulated Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, for securing the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, praising the players for their resilience after a painful semifinal exit.

The Super Eagles defeated seven-time champions Egypt in a penalty shootout after regulation time in the third-place match, capping a tournament in which Nigeria was among the most dominant sides.

Tinubu commended the team for overcoming the disappointment of their semifinal loss to host nation Morocco, also decided on penalties, and returning to finish the tournament on a high.

“Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed,” the president said in a statement. “However, our players remained undaunted and, exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.”

He said the players had once again demonstrated “the determination, persistence and can-do spirit associated with our country,” adding that Nigerians would be proud as the team received their bronze medals in Rabat on Sunday.

“Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players,” Tinubu said. “This bronze medal surely feels as good as gold.”
