Tunisia has sacked its national football team head coach Sabri Lamouchi after the 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Tunisian Football Federation confirmed the decision shortly after the game, bringing an end to Lamouchi’s short spell in charge, just months after his appointment in January.

Tunisia was outplayed for large parts of the encounter, with Sweden’s attacking trio overwhelming the North African side in a one-sided contest that exposed major defensive weaknesses.

The defeat marked one of the heaviest opening losses by an African team at the tournament and prompted swift action from the federation to revive their campaign.

Technical director Mondher Kebaier is expected to take charge on an interim basis as Tunisia prepares for its next group match.

Tunisia will now face Japan in a must-win fixture, with their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage already hanging in the balance.
