The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned till 22 February to hear the notice of motion in the suit seeking to stop the Central Bank of Nigeria from prohibiting the use of the old naira notes in the country.
The Kaduna State government had approached the apex court asking it to halt the 10 February deadline given by the CBN for the old notes to cease to be legal tender.
The state was joined in the suit by the Kogi and Zamfara State governments.
At the hearing on Wednesday, Katsina, Cross River, Ogun, Ekiti, Lagos, Ondo, and Sokoto States joined as plaintiffs in the suit while Edo and Bayelsa States joined the Attorney General of the Federation as respondents.
After listening to the joinders, the seven-man panel of the court led by Justice John Okoro fixed Wednesday 22 February as the date to hear their motions.
After the session, the lead counsel to the respondent, Kanu Agabi (SAN) encouraged Nigerians to be peaceful and law-abiding and assured them that the policy will favor them.
The Kaduna State governor, Yahaya Bello, did not fault the policy but said Nigerians should have been considered in its implementation.
He appealed to Nigerians to be peaceful pending when judgment is passed on the matter.
Governor Bello and his Kaduna State counterpart, Nasir El-Rufai were at the Supreme Court for the hearing on Wednesday.
