Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has revealed plans to sponsor a bill seeking a single six-year term for presidents and governors, beginning after the 2027 general elections.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday, Bamidele said the proposal would be among the first bills he intends to introduce when the 11th Senate is inaugurated.
He argued that a single tenure would allow elected leaders to focus fully on governance without the distraction of re-election campaigns.
According to him, the current two-term system often forces officeholders to spend a significant part of their first term preparing for a second-term bid rather than concentrating on delivering on their mandates.
Bamidele said a six-year single term would encourage leaders to give their best from the start, knowing they have only one opportunity to serve.
The lawmaker acknowledged that the proposal may generate debate and may not enjoy universal support, but maintained that lawmakers have a responsibility to pursue reforms they believe will strengthen governance and improve the political system.
He added that laws should evolve to reflect changing realities and societal needs, stressing that legislative reforms remain an essential function of parliament.
If introduced and approved by the National Assembly, the proposal would require amendments to Nigeria's Constitution before it can take effect.
