Paris Saint-Germain fullback Achraf Hakimi has been named the 2025 African Player of the Year, earning the continent’s top individual football honour at the CAF Awards held on Wednesday in Rabat, Morocco.

Hakimi, 27, edged Liverpool star Mohamed Salah and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen to the award, becoming the first defender in more than ten years to secure the title. The award, traditionally dominated by forwards, recognises African players who deliver exceptional performances for club and country.

“This award means a lot to me and to my country,” Hakimi said after receiving the trophy. “I’ve worked hard for moments like this, and I’m proud to represent Morocco on the global stage.”

CAF President Patrice Motsepe described Hakimi as “a world-class athlete who continues to elevate African football,” highlighting his consistency and leadership.

Hakimi has been central to Morocco’s strong international form and remains a key figure at PSG, delivering standout performances across domestic and European competitions. His win further cements the reputation of Morocco’s rising football generation, following their historic 2022 World Cup semi-final appearance.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie made history by winning the CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award for the third consecutive year.

The Super Falcons shot stopper received the honour at the same ceremony, with CAF hailing her achievement as a defining moment in African women’s football.
