The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has called for renewed commitment to African unity, integration and sustainable development as the continent marks Africa Day 2026.
In a statement commemorating 63 years since the founding of the Organization of African Unity, Youssouf said the celebration reflects Africa’s shared heritage and growing influence in global affairs.
He reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to the goals of Agenda 2063 and highlighted Africa’s permanent membership in the G20 as a major milestone in strengthening the continent’s role in global economic decision-making.
The AU Commission Chairperson also stressed the need for reform of the United Nations Security Council to address what he described as historical injustice against Africa.
He welcomed increasing global discussions on reparatory justice and praised Ghana’s efforts at the United Nations to advance conversations on slavery and colonialism reparations.
Youssouf said this year’s AU theme on sustainable water availability and sanitation underscores the importance of climate resilience, public health and development across the continent.
He also celebrated the qualification of nine African teams for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, describing it as a reflection of Africa’s growing talent and global influence.
He urged African diplomats and representatives worldwide to strengthen collaboration in advancing Africa’s shared priorities while appreciating international partners for supporting peace, integration and institutional reforms across the continent.
