The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered an accelerated hearing in the trial of six suspects accused of plotting to overthrow the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted the speedy trial request on Monday and fixed April 29, April 30, May 4, and May 5 for commencement of proceedings and related hearings.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), told the court that the prosecution has witnesses ready to proceed, subject to the court’s schedule.

Counsel to the first defendant, Mohammed Ilayepo, said his bail application was ready for hearing, but the court ruled that the trial would begin before bail applications are considered.

Lawyers to the second, third, and sixth defendants raised concerns over short notice and the complexity of the case, saying they were not fully prepared to proceed.

Justice Abdulmalik directed all parties to agree on workable dates and reaffirmed the court’s decision to prioritise a fast-tracked hearing in the matter.

The case has been adjourned to April 29 for the start of trial proceedings.
