The African Democratic Congress is set to hold its presidential primary today, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen contesting for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.
The exercise follows the completion of the party’s screening process conducted by a panel led by former Cross River State governor Liyel Imoke.
The party leadership, headed by interim National Chairman David Mark, opted for a competitive primary after attempts to reach a consensus among the aspirants failed.
Ahead of the exercise, the ADC urged delegates, aspirants and supporters to maintain peace and party unity throughout the process.
To coordinate the primary, the party constituted an election committee chaired by former Kwara State governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, with Prof. Yisa Gana serving as secretary.
ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said electoral officials had already been deployed nationwide, expressing confidence that the primary would be transparent and hitch-free.
According to him, the aspirants had pledged to respect and accept the outcome of the contest.
Abdullahi described the primary as a major test of the party’s commitment to internal democracy, transparency and accountable leadership, insisting that the ADC remained committed to an open and credible process.
He also appealed to party members and supporters to conduct themselves responsibly, noting that the outcome and conduct of the primary would influence public perception of the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
The spokesperson added that despite possible disagreements during the contest, the party’s broader goal remained presenting Nigerians with what he described as a credible alternative leadership platform.
He assured party members that adequate measures had been put in place to ensure a free, fair and credible exercise.
