Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the deaths of dozens of Nigerians while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State.
In a statement posted on X, Atiku described the deaths as deeply disturbing, saying those in custody remained entitled to protection of their lives and dignity regardless of the allegations against them.
He commended the Federal Government for suspending officers linked to the incident and ordering an investigation.
Atiku called for an independent, thorough and transparent investigation, with its findings made public.
He also said anyone found responsible through alleged abuse, action or negligence should be held accountable.
The former vice president said the families of the deceased deserved more than condolences, including truth and justice, while Nigerians should be assured that being held in state custody would not put their lives at risk.
He expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed for strength and comfort for them.
