England have been forced into a late squad change ahead of their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah replacing injured Newcastle United full-back Tino Livramento.

The Football Association confirmed on Tuesday that Livramento has been ruled out of the tournament after suffering a calf injury during training on Sunday.

Medical assessments showed the 23-year-old would be unable to take any further part in England's World Cup campaign, prompting the Three Lions to call up Chalobah as a replacement.

The 26-year-old Chelsea defender is expected to join England's base camp in Kansas City, while the rest of the squad prepares for Wednesday's Group L opener against Croatia in Dallas.

FIFA regulations permit teams to replace an injured outfield player up to 24 hours before their first match of the tournament, allowing England to make the change before their World Cup campaign gets underway.

Chalobah has one senior international appearance for England, having featured in the side's 3-1 defeat to Senegal in June 2025.

England will open their World Cup campaign against Croatia before facing Ghana and Panama in their remaining Group L fixtures.
