Dame Sarah Mullally has formally taken office as the Archbishop of Canterbury following a ceremonial service held in England, becoming the spiritual leader of the Church of England.
The service marked Mullally’s official assumption of office as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, succeeding Justin Welby.
Her appointment is historic, as she is the first woman to hold the position since the role was established more than 600 years ago.
Speaking after the ceremony, Mullally said her leadership would focus on unity within the Church and service to society.
“I step into this role with humility and hope, committed to strengthening our faith, promoting compassion and working for justice,” she said.
Church officials said Mullally’s tenure will prioritise unity, faith and social justice, as well as engagement with communities at home and abroad.
They described her appointment as a significant moment for the Church of England and the wider Anglican Communion.
