The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has expressed concern over rising insecurity, poverty, corruption and governance challenges in Nigeria, saying democracy must deliver tangible benefits beyond periodic elections.

In a statement marking Democracy Day, CISLAC Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, said June 12 remains a symbol of sacrifice and resistance, stressing that Nigeria’s democracy was won through the struggles of pro-democracy activists and not handed to the people.

The organisation paid tribute to democratic heroes, including Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi and other activists whose sacrifices helped shape Nigeria’s democratic journey.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, CISLAC said the country continues to grapple with terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, communal conflicts and other security threats that undermine public confidence and national stability.

The group also highlighted worsening economic hardship, rising inflation, unemployment and the high cost of living, urging government to pursue more inclusive policies that protect vulnerable citizens and reduce inequality.

According to CISLAC, persistent youth unemployment remains a major threat to social stability and requires increased investment in education, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, agriculture and industrial development.

The organisation further identified corruption, weak institutional accountability, vote-buying, electoral violence and poor internal party democracy as obstacles to democratic consolidation and national development.

It also raised concerns about the state of the education and healthcare sectors, shrinking civic space and challenges affecting public trust in institutions and the rule of law.

CISLAC called on government, political leaders, civil society groups and citizens to recommit to transparency, accountability and democratic principles, stressing that the success of Nigeria’s democracy should be measured by the security, welfare and prosperity of its people.
