The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while in captivity after being abducted by gunmen.

In a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) described the late officer as a distinguished soldier whose contributions to national security and military professionalism left a lasting impact on the nation.

Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information and military spokesperson, served in several key appointments during his career and played significant roles in counter-insurgency operations and strategic communications for the Armed Forces.

The military said it had refrained from making public comments on his abduction while efforts were ongoing to secure his release, noting that all available operational resources were deployed in the hope of bringing him home safely.

Expressing condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, the Defence Headquarters described his dedication to duty, patriotism, and commitment to Nigeria's unity as exemplary.

The military added that ongoing operations have been intensified to track down those responsible for Abubakar's abduction and other similar crimes, as well as dismantle terrorist and criminal networks operating within Nigeria.

"The Armed Forces will not relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible for terrorist activities across the nation are held accountable," the statement said.

Major General Abubakar's death has drawn fresh attention to the growing threat of kidnappings and insecurity in parts of the country, with security agencies under renewed pressure to curb the activities of armed groups targeting citizens.
