Egypt has launched an urgent diplomatic effort to preserve a fragile ceasefire in Gaza, warning that expanded Israeli military operations could jeopardize months of negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.

According to an Egyptian intelligence official, Cairo has invited a senior Hamas delegation led by chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya for talks aimed at preventing a collapse of the ceasefire agreement.

The diplomatic push follows intensified Israeli military operations in Gaza and statements by Israeli leaders indicating plans to expand areas under Israeli control.

Egypt has reportedly engaged officials from the United States, Qatar and Türkiye in efforts to return all parties to the negotiating table.

The official said Egyptian authorities are particularly concerned about proposals that could result in the displacement of Palestinians toward the Egyptian border.

A senior Hamas official said the group had received Egyptian messages aimed at containing the escalation and preserving ongoing talks.

Hamas accused Israel of repeated violations of the ceasefire and called on international guarantors to intervene.

The ceasefire, agreed to in October 2025, ended two years of fighting that caused widespread destruction and displacement across Gaza.
