The Lagos chapter of the civil society group EndBadGovernance has condemned what it calls a violent police crackdown on peaceful protesters in Makoko, Oworoshoki, Ajegunle and other communities.
The group said demonstrators were marching against forced evictions and demolitions, moving from Ikeja Under Bridge to Alausa to submit petitions to the Lagos State House of Assembly.
It alleged that a leading organiser, Hassan Taiwo Soweto, was arrested during the protest, despite the group insisting the march was orderly and nonviolent.
The statement also claimed several protesters were injured by teargas and stampedes, with journalists and medical volunteers affected.
EndBadGovernance is demanding the immediate release of Soweto and another activist, Dele Frank, compensation for those injured, and an end to what it describes as illegal demolitions and the criminalisation of peaceful protests.
