EU Calls for Stronger Border Measures After Spain’s Ceuta Migrant Crisis

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for stronger border security measures and a coordinated European response after a surge of migrants into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta triggered tensions among European Union member states.

In a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, von der Leyen said the incident showed the need for the bloc to further strengthen security at key border points, describing the protection of Europe’s external borders as a shared responsibility.

“From this incident, it is clear that we must do more to further strengthen our borders at critical points,” von der Leyen wrote, while calling for closer monitoring and the use of physical barriers where necessary.

The EU chief praised Sanchez for what she described as the swift handling of the crisis, which saw tens of thousands of migrants cross into Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco. Most of those who entered have since left the territory.

The influx, however, sparked disagreement among EU members, with Italy and Denmark calling for Spain to be suspended from the Schengen free-travel zone over concerns about uncontrolled migration.

Spain rejected the proposal, describing it as selfish and arguing that such a suspension would not be possible under EU rules. Madrid has instead called for emergency discussions among EU interior ministers to address the wider migration challenge.

Von der Leyen said a planned meeting of EU interior ministers would provide an opportunity to assess lessons from the Ceuta crisis and develop a common approach to irregular migration.

She identified five priority areas for the bloc, including preventing irregular migration through cooperation with partner countries, strengthening external borders, improving early warning systems, disrupting migrant-smuggling networks and increasing the return of failed asylum seekers.

The European Commission president said the discussions would serve as a first step ahead of a wider debate among EU leaders expected at their next summit in October.
