Public health experts have warned that El Niño-related weather changes could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, waterborne diseases and malnutrition in Nigeria.
The experts say prolonged heat could cause dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, while changes in rainfall could increase the risk of flooding, contaminated water and diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea.
They also warn that prolonged dry spells could reduce food production, drive up food prices and worsen malnutrition, particularly among children and pregnant women.
The physicians have advised Nigerians to drink enough safe water, wear lightweight clothing and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest periods of the day.
They are also calling on federal and state governments to strengthen early warning systems, disease surveillance, access to safe water and healthcare preparedness to protect vulnerable communities.
