FG Declares May 1 Public Holiday for Workers’ Day

The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers' Day.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government in Abuja.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, the minister congratulated Nigerian workers for their dedication and contributions to national development.

Tunji-Ojo described workers as the backbone of the country’s growth and economic progress, praising their resilience and commitment despite challenges.

He urged employees in both the public and private sectors to remain patriotic and productive, stressing that their role is key to achieving sustainable development.

The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and ensuring a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.

He called on Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the holiday, encouraging citizens to reflect on the importance of unity and hard work in nation-building.

Workers’ Day is celebrated annually on May 1 to honour the contributions of workers and the labour movement worldwide.
