The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Olohundare Jimoh, says more than 25 suspects have been arrested and charged to court for vandalising infrastructure along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
Jimoh disclosed this while receiving three patrol vehicles donated by the Federal Government to strengthen security operations on Section One of the highway.
According to the AIG, the suspects were arrested for stealing railings and other metal components installed on the road project.
“More than 25 individuals have been arrested, charged to court and remanded over acts of vandalism on the coastal road,” Jimoh said.
“We want to warn anyone intending to engage in vandalism that we are ready for them.”
He said incidents of vandalism had dropped significantly following intensified patrols and community policing efforts introduced along the corridor.
“The cases of vandalism have reduced to zero level because in the last three weeks we have not recorded any incident,” he said.
Jimoh also said there had been no recorded case of robbery, kidnapping or car snatching on the highway since it was opened to traffic in December 2025.
“There has not been any single incident of robbery, car snatching or kidnapping on the road,” he added.
The patrol vehicles were presented by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olufemi Dare, on behalf of the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
Dare said the vehicles were procured to support police operations and curb the theft of construction materials on the highway.
“The honourable minister is deeply concerned about the theft of steel fences and other materials on the road,” Dare said.
“That is why these patrol vehicles are being provided to ensure the activities of offenders are brought to a halt.”
Jimoh said the vehicles would be deployed by the Zone 2 Command, which covers Lagos State and Ogun State, to strengthen security as construction expands beyond Lagos.
He added that more than 30 patrol teams had already been deployed on the corridor, supported by additional operational vehicles from the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The AIG also warned motorists against violating the 30km-per-hour speed limit on the highway, saying offenders would be arrested and prosecuted.
