Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele has urged professionals and academics to embrace public service and contribute their expertise to advancing Nigeria's economic transformation.
Oyedele made the call while receiving students of the Executive Master's in Taxation programme of the University of Lagos at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja during a courtesy visit as part of their academic and leadership engagement.
The minister said the Federal Government remains committed to developing a new generation of professionals equipped to strengthen fiscal management, public finance and economic governance.
He encouraged the students to apply their knowledge to solving real-world challenges and supporting reforms that promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
"Professionals and academics have a critical role to play in national development. Public service offers an opportunity to deploy knowledge and expertise to address the country's most pressing economic challenges," Oyedele said.
Reflecting on his transition from academia and professional practice to public service, the minister stressed the importance of continuous learning, ethical leadership and dedication to national development.
He also underscored the need to build strong institutions anchored on transparency and accountability, saying lasting economic progress depends on credible governance rather than individual discretion.
"Enduring national progress is built on strong institutions, transparency and accountability. These principles should guide your careers and your contributions to Nigeria's development," he said.
The delegation, led by the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Abiola Sanni, congratulated Oyedele on his appointment and praised his contributions to teaching, mentorship and public service.
The students described the minister's leadership in tax policy and economic reform as inspiring and presented him with a commemorative plaque in recognition of his contributions to education, taxation and national economic development.
The Ministry of Finance said the visit reflects its commitment to strengthening partnerships with academic institutions and mentoring future leaders for Nigeria's long-term economic development.
