Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called for calm among as impeachment proceedings against him and his deputy proceed.

He urged the residents of Rivers state to remain composed amid ongoing political tensions.

The Governor made the appeal during a church service marking Armed Forces Remembrance Day, assuring congregants that the situation would improve and that he was drawing strength from his faith.

Fubara’s comments come as the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated the latest round of impeachment moves last Thursday, accusing him and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu of gross misconduct and unauthorised spending.

The current effort marks at least the second impeachment attempt since he became governor in 2023 amid a protracted dispute with his estranged predecessor and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Speaking briefly at the service, Fubara said he had chosen to remain silent on the political fray and reiterated a remark he made at a New Year banquet that critics “bark when they do not understand.”

His deputy, Odu, who spoke to the congregation after reading a lesson at the service, urged attendees to uphold good conduct and continue to pray for the administration.

The impeachment process has deepened political tensions in the oil-producing state, with previous efforts temporarily halted after interventions at the national level.

Lawmakers in Rivers have accused Fubara of various breaches, while supporters of the governor and other stakeholders have called for dialogue and respect for constitutional processes.
