Commuters on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway outbound from Lagos faced heavy delays Tuesday as work resumed to replace damaged expansion joints on the Kara Bridge.

The rehabilitation, paused after its first phase, has stretched traffic back toward Otedola Bridge, slowing outbound movement.

Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Layi Komolafe, stressed the necessity of the repairs.

“Replacing the expansion joints on the Kara Bridge outbound from Lagos is a must,” he said, calling on the FRSC, Lagos Police, and LASTMA to help manage traffic.

Motorists are urged to follow directives and plan trips carefully.

The Federal Ministry of Works advised drivers to consider alternative routes: Shimawa or Mosinmi for travelers from Ikorodu to Mowe, Sagamu, or Ibadan, and the Epe corridor via Ijebu Ode from Lagos Island.

FRSC Lagos Sector Commander, Ganiyu Hamzat, warned that damaged road sections have caused accidents as vehicles attempt to avoid oncoming traffic. “Some sections force vehicles to swerve, leading to collisions,” he said.

The ministry expects repairs to take six weeks to two months. “Motorists are reminded that shorter routes may not be faster.

We appreciate public patience as we ensure safety and stability on this key route,” the ministry added.
