The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress on Thursday praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for declaring a national security emergency and approving 20,000 new police recruits, calling the move “decisive” and necessary to curb rising crime.

In a statement, Lagos APC spokesman, Mogaji (Hon.) Seye Oladejo said the new hires bring the total number of recruits under Mr. Tinubu’s administration to 50,000 — following an earlier approval of 30,000 officers.

The party described the step as a “historic measure” that will strengthen security and boost on-the-ground policing.

The party also urged the National Assembly to review existing laws so states can set up state police where needed. Lagos APC said the change would fix long-standing problems and allow local governments to respond faster to crime.

The statement called the proposed legal reform a “complete rethink of national security” and said it would help decentralise policing.

The Lagos APC criticised past administrations and said critics who opposed the plan should learn from the current effort. The statement said the president’s actions show “leadership in its purest form — decisive, courageous, and unflinchingly focused on restoring peace and stability across Nigeria.” It added, “Nigeria is in safe hands.”

The party urged lawmakers to move quickly on the legal changes and for security agencies to speed up recruitment, training and deployment so the new officers can begin work.
