The Lagos State House of Assembly is calling for stronger community-level security and tougher prosecution of vandals and those who profit from stolen public infrastructure.
The lawmakers want the state government to equip and train the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and other local security outfits to improve surveillance and prevent the destruction of roads, bridges and other public facilities.
The call followed a motion by the lawmaker representing Ikorodu II, Moshood Aro, who raised concerns over the vandalism of public infrastructure, particularly in FESTAC.
Aro said residents were being forced to bear a double financial burden as taxpayers’ money was used to build infrastructure and then repair facilities damaged by vandals.
The lawmakers also urged authorities to investigate and prosecute businesses and individuals who buy or sell stolen government property, stressing that tackling the market for vandalised materials is key to curbing the crime.
Speaker Mudashiru Obasa backed the call, urging stronger coordination among government agencies, security bodies and communities.
The Assembly further called for greater support for neighbourhood security structures, saying improved funding, equipment and training would strengthen their ability to detect and prevent vandalism.
