The Lagos State Government says it will begin intensified public advocacy ahead of the planned reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the government will engage communities and stakeholders before enforcement begins.

Wahab explained that the state has consulted widely with local governments, community development associations and other stakeholders ahead of the planned reintroduction.

He said the government will spend the next few weeks building public awareness and momentum before full implementation begins on April 25.

According to him, enforcement agencies will only begin applying the full weight of the law after the awareness phase.

Wahab said the aim of the initiative is to restore environmental responsibility among residents in Lagos in view of the state’s growing population and environmental challenges.

He added that the exercise is intended to revive the culture of environmental cleanliness that existed in the state before it was suspended years ago.
