Lagos Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge To Open Before Christmas

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says the Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge will be opened to the public before Christmas, with construction now about 80 per cent complete.

The governor gave the assurance during an inspection of the project, acknowledging that construction had exceeded the September completion deadline.

He said the visit was to assess the progress of work and identify the reasons for the delay, while stressing that the project’s engineering design and safety standards must not be compromised.

Sanwo-Olu explained that the bridge involves installing more than 300 tonnes of steel at heights of up to 25 metres, making it a demanding engineering project.

He said three of the four major steel components, designed to resemble interwoven cane, had been completed, while work was ongoing on the remaining section.

The governor added that lighting featuring the colours of Lagos State would be installed to enhance the appearance of the bridge.

Other activities, including site cleaning, repainting of kerbs, landscaping and restoration of affected areas, would also be completed before it opens to the public.

Sanwo-Olu said the state government would not sacrifice engineering quality and public safety to meet the deadline.

He also expressed hope that the area would become a destination for recreation, cultural heritage and tourism, reflecting the community’s history and identity.

The bridge was commissioned for construction in 2022 as part of the state government’s infrastructure projects to ease traffic congestion along the Opebi, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Mende and Ojota corridor.
