The Lagos State Government (LASG) has announced plans to invest about $10 million in regenerating Makoko, the sprawling waterfront community that has been at the centre of public debate following recent demolition exercises.

At a press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, Dr Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser on e-GIS and Urban Renewal to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, explained that the state is committing $2 million, with hopes of securing an additional $8 million from the United Nations as counterpart funding for the project.

The planned regeneration effort centres on a proposed “water city” project designed to revamp the fishing community’s environment and infrastructure.

According to Dr Babatunde, the initiative has not yet officially commenced and remains dependent on the availability of funding and partner support.

One purpose of recent government actions, including the removal of structures near high-tension power lines, was to reduce safety risks for residents, especially in areas where cables are dangerously low over the lagoon.

He emphasised that only buildings directly under such power lines were affected so far, as part of efforts to prevent potential accidents.

Dr Babatunde noted that the government initially considered two development options for Makoko, a shoreline extension and the water city project.

Environmental concerns raised by experts and commentators have led officials to prioritise the water city plan, which they describe as more eco-friendly.

However, protests by Makoko residents have emerged in response to the demolition of some homes, with community members demanding compensation for lost property and an end to further demolition activities.

In response, the Lagos State House of Assembly has scheduled a meeting with community representatives to address these grievances.

The regeneration announcement comes amid broader discussions about balancing urban renewal, public safety, and the rights of long-standing communities in Lagos as the state strives toward modernisation and improved infrastructure.
