The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned the extrajudicial killing of a suspect by police officers in Delta State, warning that no law enforcement agent has the authority to act as “prosecutor, judge and executioner.”

In a statement reacting to a viral video of the incident, the association described the killing as arbitrary, unlawful and a misuse of power, saying it further damages the image of the Nigeria Police Force.

The NBA said the act highlights persistent allegations of rights violations by security agencies and stressed that under Nigeria’s constitution, every suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.

“No officer of the law, regardless of rank or circumstance, has the right to take life outside the provisions of the law,” the association said, warning that unchecked abuses could erode fundamental rights and deepen a culture of impunity.

While commending police authorities for condemning the act and initiating action against the principal officer, the NBA said accountability must extend to all officers involved.

“The viral video clearly shows that other policemen aided or were involved in this heinous act,” it said, calling for a thorough investigation and prosecution of anyone found to have aided or abetted the killing.

The association also demanded that the prosecution be conducted transparently and without delay, warning that any attempt to shield those responsible would undermine public trust in law enforcement.

It said its human rights committees in Warri, Effurun and Udu would monitor the case to ensure justice is served and urged authorities to uphold the rule of law and protect citizens’ rights.

The NBA extended condolences to the family of the deceased, saying it shares in their grief and will continue to push for accountability.

“This incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive police reform, particularly in the areas of accountability, use of force and respect for human rights,” said Afam Osigwe, president of the association.

The NBA added that officers found culpable should be removed from service, stressing that misconduct must not be allowed to define the police institution.
