The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested an 83-year-old woman previously convicted of drug offences and a South African national in separate operations involving large consignments of illicit drugs.

The agency said Uloma Uchechi Sunday was arrested Oct. 7 at her residence in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, with methamphetamine and Colorado, a synthetic cannabinoid, allegedly concealed around her waist.

Sunday was previously arrested in May 2025 alongside her daughter, Chisom Uchechi, 32. Both pleaded guilty to drug offences and were sentenced to 12 months in prison or a ₦200,000 fine each. They paid the fines and were released, the agency said.

In a separate operation at Port Harcourt International Airport, NDLEA operatives arrested South African national Gebashe Sithandiwe Jessie with 32.74 kilogrammes of cannabis concealed in two travelling bags.

At Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport, officers intercepted 354,000 tapentadol tablets weighing 307.2 kilogrammes in a shipment from Pakistan. Another operation uncovered 75.9 kilogrammes of Colorado in cargo from the United Kingdom.

The agency also reported major drug seizures in Cross River, Edo, Ondo, Taraba, Kano and Kaduna states, including cannabis, tramadol, diazepam and other controlled substances.

In Plateau State, a raid in Jos led to the arrest of Christian Chukwudi Uju, 45, and the recovery of methamphetamine, two pump-action rifles, a locally made gun and ammunition.

NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa commended officers involved in the operations and urged them to sustain efforts against drug trafficking and abuse, according to agency spokesman Femi Babafemi.
