The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has intercepted drug consignments worth more than N5 billion across Lagos and Rivers ports and arrested an Italy-bound businessman with 4.8 kilograms of cocaine hidden in shoes and travel bags.

The businessman, Philip Tunde, 38, was arrested Sept. 27 at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, while preparing to board a Royal Air Maroc flight to Milan.

NDLEA operatives recovered 16 parcels of cocaine hidden in eight pairs of trainers and canvas shoes, along with 195 wraps concealed in the railings of four travelling bags.

The agency said Tunde claimed he paid N16 million in cash for the cocaine in the shoes, while the consignment in the bags was intended for a business partner in Italy.

The wider seizures included more than N3.8 billion worth of Canadian Loud at Tincan Island, N372 million worth of Thai Loud at Apapa and 22 kilograms of Loud and 109,600 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup at Onne Port.

NDLEA operatives also destroyed 20,234 kilograms of cannabis on 8.09 hectares of farmland in Osun State and recovered 209,000 tramadol tablets in Lagos and 32.2 kilograms of cannabis in Edo.

The agency also arrested Idris Mohammed Kurra, 47, six years after he allegedly jumped bail while facing trial at the Federal High Court in Jos over 198 kilograms of cannabis.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended the officers and urged them to sustain intelligence-driven operations against drug trafficking networks.
