The National Examinations Council has released the results of the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination, with 804,948 candidates, or 58.67%, obtaining at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
The figure represents a 2.64 percentage-point decline from the 60.26% recorded in 2025, when 818,492 candidates achieved the same benchmark.
NECO Registrar Prof. Dantani Wushishi announced the results Thursday at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, 63 days after the last paper was written.
Wushishi said 1,378,048 candidates registered for the examination, while 1,371,992 eventually sat for the exercise, which was conducted from June 15 to July 23, 2026.
He said 1,162,118 candidates, representing 84.70%, obtained at least five credits irrespective of their results in English Language and Mathematics.
The registrar also reported a sharp reduction in examination malpractice. According to NECO, 1,406 candidates were involved in malpractice cases in 2026, compared with 3,878 in 2025 — a 64.74% decline.
Wushishi attributed the reduction to measures introduced by the council to strengthen examination monitoring and improve the conduct of the exercise.
He commended the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Services for their support and vigilance during the examination, saying their presence helped reinforce discipline and protect the integrity of the process.
The registrar also disclosed that 334 candidates with special needs, including those with hearing and visual impairments, albinism, autism and low vision, participated in the examination.
Wushishi thanked President Bola Tinubu for reappointing him for a second tenure and Education Minister Tunji Alausa for his confidence in the council’s leadership.
He assured candidates, parents, schools and other stakeholders that NECO would continue to uphold the integrity of its examinations.
